Dr. Lauren Norman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She holds a B.S. in Psychology and an M.A. in Sociology from Middle Tennessee State University, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Central Florida. Her doctoral work focused on crime and deviance, with a minor concentration in substance use and misuse.
At UNCP, Dr. Norman teaches courses including Sociology of Drug Use, Sociology of Emotions, Criminology, Sex Crimes, Women and Crime, Social Problems, Sociology of Film and Sociological Theory.
Her research centers on two main areas. First, she has published several articles on substance use among adolescents and young adults, with a focus on prescription stimulant misuse among undergraduates. She has also studied marijuana and ecstasy use. Second, her work explores emotions from a sociological perspective, including how undergraduate women understand love and romance and the commodification of emotions in webcamming.
Outside the classroom, Dr. Norman enjoys spending time with her husband and their two pets. She also loves camping, attending concerts and traveling.
