Dr. Tracy Vargas is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and a member of the Maynor Honors College faculty. She holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh, an M.A. in Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs (2018).
Dr. Vargas teaches courses on sociological theory, poverty, gender and technology. A qualitative researcher, her ongoing 10+ year ethnographic study examines the precarious working conditions of low-wage employees in U.S. dollar stores. She is also a certified Penn Resilience Program Trainer and teaches workshops to certify students in resilience strategies.
She is active in both campus and disciplinary service. At UNCP, she has served on numerous committees and the Institutional Review Board. Nationally, she serves as Vice-Chair of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) Labor Studies Division, Editor for the UNC System Learning and Technology Journal, a committee member for the Labor Action Research Network and a member of the Outreach Committee for the Working-Class Studies Association.
