Dr. Victoria Kurdyla is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. A North Carolina native, she earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from North Carolina State University with a focus on crime, deviance and social control. She also holds an M.A. in Sociology, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies, a B.A. in Sociology and a B.A. in Psychology, all from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

At UNCP, Dr. Kurdyla teaches courses including Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Criminology, Social Deviance, Sexuality and Society and Family Violence. Her research bridges queer criminology, victimology, gender and sexuality studies and intersectionality. She has published several articles on help-seeking behaviors and barriers faced by transgender and nonbinary survivors of intimate partner violence. Her work explores how intimate partner violence is part of the broader, cumulative experiences of violence in the lives of transgender individuals.

Dr. Kurdyla also serves as co-editor of Sociation, the official journal of the North Carolina Sociological Association. Outside of academia, she enjoys spending time with her partner and their dog Sirius, as well as playing music, crafting for Halloween, exploring the outdoors and traveling.
