Justin Winans, director of Campus Recreation, has been appointed to serve on the NIRSA Honor Award Committee for the 2026–2027 term, a distinguished national leadership role in campus recreation.

The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) is the leading association dedicated to advancing recreation, sport and well-being in higher education, serving nearly 4,500 members nationwide. The NIRSA Honor Award is the organization's highest recognition, honoring a member for outstanding achievements in the profession and exemplary service to the association.

“I was humbled and excited to receive the appointment,” Winans said. “It's a great opportunity to contribute to the recognition of individuals who have made a lasting impact on their students, institutions and the field as a whole.”

As a member of the Honor Award Committee, Winans will work alongside recreation professionals from across the country to encourage nominations, review submissions and select the annual honoree whose contributions have significantly influenced the profession.

Winans brings more than 22 years of professional experience in campus recreation to the committee.

“I believe I bring an experienced voice to the committee,” Winans said. “Working closely with multiple university departments and with several NIRSA work groups has helped me understand the importance of a wide range of abilities and skill sets that positively influence our campus communities.”

Winans said he has helped lead initiatives focused on student engagement, wellness and campus collaboration across UNCP, all core values of NIRSA's mission.

“Justin is recognized as a respected leader on our campus, consistently demonstrating a commitment to service, collaboration and student success,” said Dr. Christie Poteet, assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs. “Being appointed to this committee is a well-deserved recognition and reflection of the impact he has made both within our institution and beyond. We are proud to see his leadership and dedication acknowledged at this level.”

“I'm grateful for the support and mentorship I've received from colleagues and the UNCP community throughout my career,” Winans said. “I view this appointment as not only a personal honor but also an opportunity to positively represent UNCP and continue advocating for the important role campus recreation plays in student success and well-being.”
