UNCP has introduced a free mobile app as the latest enhancement to its Brave Alert emergency notification system, expanding how the university communicates critical information and supports campus safety.

Brave Alert has long served as UNCP’s official emergency notification system, delivering timely alerts during severe weather and other campus emergencies. The new Brave Alert app extends those capabilities directly to smartphones, allowing the university to communicate more efficiently while providing students, faculty and staff with additional safety tools they can access anytime.

“Brave Alert is a system our campus community already knows and trusts,” said George E. Johnson, chief of UNCP Police & Public Safety. “This new app strengthens that system by putting faster communication and practical safety resources directly into the hands of our students and employees.”

Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings said the launch reflects the university’s continued commitment to providing a safe and supportive campus.

“A secure learning environment is foundational to student success,” Cummings said. “Brave Alert enhances how we support our campus community, ensuring our students, faculty and staff remain informed and connected.”

The Brave Alert mobile app replaces the former Live Safe app and is fully integrated into UNCP’s emergency infrastructure. In addition to receiving campus-wide alerts, users can access:

  • One-tap calling to UNCP Police or 911
  • Mobile Blue Light: Simultaneously send your location to and call UNCP Police. They will receive your location in real-time and talk to you on the phone.
  • Friend Walk: Share your location with trusted contacts during a timed walk.
  • Virtual Walk: Request that UNCP Police monitor your walk in real time if needed.
Location sharing only occurs during an active Virtual Walk session that you initiate.
  • Quick access to campus safety resources and emergency procedures.

By consolidating mobile safety tools into one unified platform, Brave Alert enhances institutional responsiveness and cross-campus coordination during emergencies while also supporting everyday safety needs.

Live Safe will be deactivated on April 3, 2026.

The Brave Alert mobile app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
