A degree in sociology opens the door to a wide range of meaningful careers where you can make a difference. Whether you're passionate about helping others, shaping public policy, working in education or exploring data and research, sociology gives you the skills to understand complex social issues — and the tools to help solve them.

Our program gives you a strong foundation in theory, research and writing. You'll take core courses in social problems, statistics and theory, then choose from a wide range of electives that explore global issues, community development or social justice. With flexibility built into the program, you can shape your path around your passions. Graduate ready to make an impact in the field that matters most to you.

Degree Requirements

Sociology Minors

Add a deeper understanding of human behavior and social systems to your major. A sociology minor helps you explore culture, identity, inequality and social systems. You'll gain new ways of thinking that you can use in any career.  Which area of sociology do you want to specialize in? Explore the various focus areas within our program to find the one that aligns best with your career goals.

Explore how societies work and how people interact. Gain insight into how social structures and relationships affect criminal justice issues. This minor gives you a clear view of social dynamics and their role in the criminal justice system.

Sociology Minor

Study the relationship between health, illness and society. This minor examines how social factors impact health outcomes and healthcare. It helps you understand the health challenges people in the criminal justice system face. It also gives you insight into how these issues impact their well-being.

Medical Sociology Minor

Focus on the issues related to drug and alcohol use. This minor covers the causes, effects and treatment of addiction. It prepares you to address substance abuse problems within the criminal justice system and support individuals affected by addiction.

Substance Abuse Minor

Explore how gender shapes lives and societies. Learn about gender roles and expectations. Understand how gender affects identity and opportunities. This minor focuses on gender issues and promotes equality.

Gender Studies Minor

Explore the challenges of terrorism and its effects on security and politics. This minor uses social sciences to study terrorism's impact on democratic societies. Understand how terrorism influences global politics and national security. This minor helps to prepare you for roles in:

The Flexibility of Online Learning

Students pursuing a Sociology or Criminal Justice degree online must transfer all of UNCP’s General Education requirements—including two hours of physical education — to stay on track for degree completion. While all major coursework is available online, general education and non-major courses may not be offered in an online format. Planning ahead with a transfer advisor is essential for a smooth transition.
