Our programs prepare students for meaningful careers through hands-on learning, global perspectives and community engagement. Opportunities

A.D. Gallery
Serving the university and local community, the gallery provides a venue for student
and faculty work, as well as that of local, regional, national and international artists.
The gallery helps fulfill the department’s goal of providing outstanding educational
opportunities for its students by bringing quality visual arts to the university and
the community at large.

Degrees
UNC Pembroke offers a range of art undergraduate and graduate degree options designed
to meet diverse creative and professional goals. Students can choose from multiple
tracks in our Art major or become an art educator through the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with Art Specialization. All of our programs providing a strong foundation in visual arts and cultural expression.

Art Club
The UNCP Art Club is a vibrant, student-led organization that brings together artists
of all skill levels to share ideas, create together and build community. Open to all
majors, the club hosts workshops, exhibitions, campus art events and collaborative
projects that encourage creative expression and networking. It’s a great way for students
to get involved, gain hands-on experience and connect with peers who share a passion
for the arts.
The National Art Education Association Club
The National Art Education Association Club is an active club in the Art Department,
and members are art education students. The Club has hosted several fundraisers, attended
the North Caroline Art Education Association annual conference in Winston-Salem, conducted
a service-learning project with the Pembroke Housing Authority afterschool program
and created an art booth at the Laurinburg Arts Festival.

Studios

Ceramics
Locklear Hall, Room 104B
In ceramics, students explore clay as a material and utilize handbuilding techniques
such as coil, slab and pinch, and the pottery wheel to construct various functional
and sculptural forms. In introductory classes, students are also presented with contemporary
and historical practices in the medium of clay and learn about glaze application and
firing processes. The studio features both electric and wood-fire kilns.

Digital Arts
Locklear Hall, Room 113 and 115
The digital art studio offers two computer labs running industry-standard software
for image creation and manipulation, graphic design, video compositing, animation
and more. Beyond the stations, digital art students have access to WACOM tablets,
DSLR cameras, lighting equipment and large format flatbed scanners.

Drawing
Locklear Hall, Room 211
The drawing studio provides a focused, creative environment where students build foundational and advanced skills in observational and expressive drawing. Through hands-on practice and exploration of various techniques, students develop confidence and a strong visual language.

Painting
Locklear Hall, Room 123
The painting studio has a spacious, flexible floor space that allows for up to 15
students to work comfortably. Acrylic, watercolor, oil painting, assemblage and mixed
media work are supported by sturdy easels and ample open studio time. Our storage
racks easily house completed canvases up to four feet in height. Gesso, canvas and
stretcher bars are provided for enrolled students each semester.

Printmaking
Locklear Hall, Room 101
The printmaking studio offers three etching/relief presses, one letter-press, two
lithographic presses, a sizable selection of lithography stone and exposure units
for screenprint, intaglio and lithography. The space is comprised of a large studio
that is fully equipped for etching, lithography, as well as an in house darkroom.

Sculpture
Locklear Hall, Room 104A
The sculpture studio offers space and equipment for steel fabrication, metal casting, wood working, carving in various materials and projects dealing in both additive and subtractive processes in a variety of media as well as accommodations for installation art.
