Scholars in the Making
Funded by the Mellon Foundation, Research Engagement Action Community Humanities (REACH)
allows you to conduct research with a faculty mentor, attend conferences and access
funding for graduate school prep. With resources like the Summer Research Exploration
Program, this initiative paves the way for advanced studies in the humanities and
beyond.
Being able to present my research on the national level has been an amazing experience. This opportunity will hopefully provide me more opportunities in the future, whether in the workforce or more academic settings such as grad school.
Scholarship Program
The COMPASS Scholarship Program supports UNCP students pursuing degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Geo-Environmental Studies through need-based scholarships, mentoring, research opportunities, professional development, and a strong community of support that helps students develop as STEM scholars. Funded by the National Science Foundation’s S-STEM Program, COMPASS reduces financial barriers while promoting academic and career success.
I am eternally grateful I was offered the opportunity to be part of COMPASS while attending UNCP. I got accepted into a funded graduate program, got to study and work with viruses, and I truly would have never thought that possible if it were not for the wonderful mentorship, guidance, and support of the faculty at UNCP and the wonderful members of the COMPASS Scholarship.
Build Community
I have found many ways to connect with other students, faculty and staff on campus. There are so many options for clubs and organizations; there's something for everyone.
Explore New Frontiers
From our Cyber Defense Education Center to our Biofuels Project, we offer research facilities and projects that help uncover new findings in your field. Collaborate with faculty, present your work at conferences and build skills that prepare you for graduate studies or professional careers.
I am forever thankful for the opportunities I never imagined were possible, the friends I didn’t know I needed and a place to call home.

Stand out to future employers and give yourself a competitive edge with an internship. Apply classroom knowledge to real-world settings while working with local organizations.
I was able to secure a software engineering internship at Microsoft, which is the job I've dreamed of since I was a kid. I know UNCP is the reason for much of my success.

Interim Associate Dean for Curriculum and Student Success, College of Arts and Sciences For Donavin Hansberry, a senior mass communication major at University of North Carolina Pembroke, a life-changing moment in 2024 reshaped his path. UNC Pembroke REACH Fellows are using archives, oral histories and community storytelling to preserve overlooked histories while opening doors to graduate school, national internships and careers in public humanities. For decades, the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation has touched the lives of women across the state by encouraging outstanding scholarship and professional development and by providing one-on-one mentoring to navigate careers. Glaxo's Women in Science Scholars are selected from among the best and brightest students at 30 universities across the state. UNC Pembroke's Shelley Chavis, a biology major, and Kathryn Bering, a chemistry major, joined dozens of women during the annual scholars' conferences last October and April.Dean's Office
