Adjunct nursing professor honored with state award

UNC Pembroke Clinical Assistant Professor Jermecka Hamilton Covington has been named the 2021 Rookie of The Year by the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA). The annual award is given by the NCNA board of directors to a nurse who has been a member less than two years and excels at promoting a positive image of nursing and the professional organization to peers and consumers.

UNCP climbs in 2022 U.S. News’ Best Colleges ranking

UNC Pembroke appeared in four categories in the U.S. News & World Report 2022 Best Colleges rankings. UNCP was ranked No.65 among Regional Universities in the South—climbing 10 spots each of the last two years. UNCP also ranked as a top performer for Social Mobility (18th), Top Public Schools­–Regional Universities in the South (30th), and Best Undergraduate Nursing (221st).

UNCP’s Leslie Locklear appointed to Hunt-Lee Commission

UNC Pembroke’s Dr. Leslie Locklear has been appointed to the newly-created Hunt-Lee Commission. Locklear serves as program coordinator for the First Americans Teacher Education program at UNCP. Additionally, she serves as an adjunct professor in the Professional School Counseling Department and co-chair of the N.C. Native American Youth Organization Adult Advisory Committee. She previously served on the state’s DRIVE (Develop a Representative and Inclusive Vision for Education) Task Force.

UNC Pembroke alumni magazine wins state award

UNC Pembroke's alumni magazine was awarded the Award of Excellence at the North Carolina Public Relations Society of America's (NCPRSA) annual InSpire Awards ceremony. UNCP Today won the Bronze Award in the magazine category. The annual awards recognize the best public relations campaigns and tactics for the previous year in North Carolina.

PBS North Carolina, in partnership with the UNC System and the Board of Governors Committee on Historically Minority-Serving Institutions (HMSI), announces the new series The Innovators: The Transformative Power of NC's Historically Black and American Indian Universities.

UNCP graduate earns national student veteran leadership award

Taja Glasco struggled to find her footing when she enrolled at UNC Pembroke following her career as a pharmacy specialist in the Army. “The military can be a great career, but it is hard to remember how to be a civilian again,” she said. Glasco didn’t take long to find her way after becoming acclimated with the Academic and Military Outreach Office and the resources it offers student veterans. Glasco eventually stepped into a leadership role and began lending a hand to other veterans at UNCP.

UNCP senior Kiara Moore awarded John M. Belk Impact Fellowship

Kiara Moore is the first student from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke to be accepted into the John M. Belk Impact Fellowship, granted by The Hunt Institute. The paid, 10-month fellowship focuses on training social impact leaders through various projects, including policy briefs and research, social media efforts and quantitative analysis. Moore is looking forward to supporting programs and systems that promote equity in all levels of education.

Branch, Kabir named 2021 Early Assurance Scholars

Each year, two of the 86 seats in the entering class of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University are reserved four years in advance for deserving students at UNC Pembroke. This year, the distinct honor goes to incoming freshmen Sayeed Kabir and Lindsay Branch, who were named 2021 Early Assurance Scholars. Considered one of the most prestigious four-year merit awards at UNCP, the Early Assurance program pays for tuition, books and room and board. Kabir describes the congratulatory phone call from the dean of admissions at Brody as life-changing.

Alumna Randi Dagenhart named UNC System Presidential Scholar

Randi Dagenhart, a Fall 2020 graduate of UNC Pembroke, has been selected as a UNC System Presidential Scholar for the 2021-22 academic year. Dagenhart will serve a one-year appointment and provide a wide range of professional functions for the UNC System Office. She will have the opportunity to interact with President Peter Hans, his senior leadership team and the UNC Board of Governors. She will experience firsthand how education legislation and university policy affect current students and faculty systemwide.
