Transfer Student Advising

The Transfer Transition and Engagement staff know that every transfer student brings a unique story, set of experiences, and academic goals. Whether you’re joining us from a community college or another university, we’re excited to support you on your academic journey. Our dedicated team of advisors are here to help you navigate your transition, understand your transfer credits, explore your academic options, and assist you with creating a clear path toward graduation.

How to Prepare for Your Advising Session

  • Check Your Registration Date - Know when you are eligible to register based on your current classification.
  • Review Your Degree Plan in Degree Works
    • Identify courses you’ve completed and what’s next.
    • Check to see if you have any holds that may prevent you from registering:
myUNCP > Holds and Restrictions. If you see a hold, resolve it before your advising appointment.
    • Common Holds & Who to Contact:
      • Balance Due/ Accounts Hold: Student Accounts or Cashier’s Office.
      • Final Official College Transcripts Hold: Admissions Office.
      • Parking Fine Hold: Campus Police & Parking Services.
  • Make a List of Courses & Questions - Include preferred classes and backup options, prerequisite requirements, graduation timelines, or academic support.
  • Think About Your Goals - Consider internships, minors, or career interests to discuss with your advisor.
  • Bring What You Need - Laptop/tablet or phone, pen and paper, any questions you may have, and any forms that need advisor signature.
  • Be honest about your academic goals and challenges.
  • Take notes on recommendations and next steps.
  • Ask for clarification if anything is unclear.
  • Register for classes as soon as possible.
  • Follow up on any action items (e.g., removing holds, submitting forms).
  • Reach out if you have additional questions.

Transfer Student Tip: Registering early gives you the best opportunity to enroll in high-demand or limited-enrollment classes— especially if you're enrolled in one of our online completion programs and require online courses only.
