American Indian Studies

Explore the histories, cultures and contemporary issues of Indigenous peoples — with a focus on the Southeast. American Indian Studies at UNC Pembroke connects you directly to local tribal communities through courses on Native governance, health, environmental justice and more. You’ll gain insights and skills that apply to many fields — from education and law to social services and museum work. Whether you’re Native or non-Native, this program empowers you to deepen your understanding and make a meaningful impact.

Bachelor of Arts in AIS

Our program focuses on experiential learning. In the classroom, you’ll get a holistic view of the tribal history, customs and traditions of American Indians. Outside of the classroom, you’ll work hands-on with local tribes to understand and address their needs and concerns. Explore all degree requirements.

Deepen your knowledge of the diverse and often complex histories of Indigenous peoples in the Americas. Learn about sovereignty, nation-building and the impact of colonization on Native communities.

Explore contemporary issues like social justice, cultural preservation and community leadership. Discover how Indigenous leaders address challenges in health, education and economic development.

Engage in courses that focus on Southeastern American Indian tribes, including the Lumbee, to understand local histories, social structures and current issues facing these communities today.

Building on that legacy, the Department of American Indian Studies explores the rich diversity of Native history and culture, promotes research and scholarship on Indigenous issues and prepares students for professional and academic careers.

American Indian Heritage Center

The American Indian Heritage Center serves as a central hub for all students interested in Native American culture and history. From gathering spots to quiet study areas and cultural programs that celebrate the heritage of Southeast American Indian communities, you can use this space to find others with similar interests and build your tribal community on campus.

A destination for history, education and community engagement, the Museum of the Southeast American Indian preserves and celebrates the stories, artifacts and traditions of Southeast American Indians. With rotating exhibits, guest speakers and educational programs, the museum serves as both a local cultural hub and a learning resource for students.
