Praxis

The Praxis® tests are a series of assessments designed to measure the academic skills and subject-specific knowledge needed for teaching. Required by many states, including North Carolina, the Praxis is a key step in the teacher licensure process.

Administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), the Praxis includes:

  • Praxis Core: Tests basic skills in reading, writing and math.

  • Praxis Subject Assessments: Evaluate knowledge in specific teaching areas.

  • Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): Assesses general pedagogical knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Praxis Core is a testing program that many states use as part of their licensure requirements.  The Praxis Core test is composed of three subtests: Core Reading, Core Writing and Core Mathematics.

Most will need to take the Praxis Core.

You must take and pass the Praxis Core tests (Core Reading, Core Writing and Core Mathematics tests in order to be admitted into the UNCP Educator Preparation Program

Unless you have:

  • a four-year college degree, with an overall 2.7 GPA, from a regionally accredited institution; or
  • SAT score of 1100 (Verbal/Reading and Math only) prior to March 1, 2016
  • SAT score of 1170 taken after March 1, 2016
  • ACT combined score of 24

If you meet any of these exemptions, you do NOT have to take any of the Praxis Core tests.

Individual Praxis Area Exemptions

  • To be exempt from the Praxis Cor Mathematics tests, meet one of the following:
    • SAT Math score of 550 (prior to March 1, 2016)
    • SAT Math score of 570 (taken after March 1, 2016)
    • ACT math score of 24 do NOT have to take the Praxis Core Mathematics test.
  • To be exempt from the Praxis Core Writing tests, meet one of the following:
    • SAT Verbal/Reading score of 550 (prior to March 1, 2016)
    • SAT reading and writing score of 600 (taken after March 1, 2016)
    • ACT English test score of 24

In NC, passing scores for the Core Academic Skills for Educator tests are as follows:

  • Composite Score: 468
  • Reading: 156
  • Writing: 162
  • Mathematics: 150
