More information about general education requirements:
Transfer of Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degree programs
a. The CAA enables North Carolina community college graduates of two-year Associate
in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) degree programs who are admitted to constituent
institutions of The University of North Carolina System to transfer with junior status.
b. Requirements for admission to some major programs may necessitate additional courses
not available at the community college. Time to baccalaureate degree may be impacted
for students entering such programs, and students should plan accordingly.
c. Universities cannot place requirements on students transferring under the CAA that
are not required of their native students.
d. A student who completes the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree prior
to transfer to a UNC institution will have fulfilled the UNC institution’s lower-division
general education requirements.
e. Each UNC campus will establish and publish a campus policy/guideline outlining
the campus decision whether a student who receives an Associate in Arts or Associate
in Science degree through reverse transfer will have fulfilled the UNC institution’s
lower-division general education requirements.
f. Due to degree requirements in some majors, additional courses at the UNC institution
may be required beyond the general education courses and pre-major courses taken at
the community college.
g. Community college graduates of the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree
programs who have earned 60 semester hours in approved transfer courses with a grade
of “C” or better and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale will receive at
least 60 semester hours of academic credit upon admission to a UNC institution.
h. All courses approved for transfer in the CAA are designated as fulfilling general
education or pre-major/elective requirements (see Appendix G). While general education
and pre-major courses may also be used as electives, elective courses may not be used
to fulfill general education requirements.
i. CAA courses taken beyond the 60-61 SHC of credit in which the student received
less than a “C” will not negate the provisions of the CAA.
North Carolina’s Reverse Transfer Program is an initiative in which students are rewarded for credit they have already earned or will earn at a four-year university. The program is designed to award an associate degree to students who previously attended a North Carolina community college (NCCC) and fulfilled the associate degree requirements while working toward a bachelor’s degree at UNC Pembroke.
To qualify, students must:
- be currently registered.
- have earned a minimum of 16 credits from a North Carolina community college.
- have a total of 60 or more credit hours applied to their degree program; this can be verified in Degree Works through BraveWeb.
- opt-in to participate in reverse transfer.
If you meet the qualifications and are interested in participating, please follow the instructions below to opt-in.
Instructions to opt-in:
- Log into BraveWeb, Banner Self Service.
- In Student Services, select Reverse Transfer.
- By virtue of “opt in,” you sign an agreement stating that you will follow UNC Pembroke’s curriculum toward the baccalaureate degree and that you understand that academic advisors at UNC Pembroke cannot provide advising for community college coursework.
- Once you opt in, you will receive an email confirmation. No further action is required; however, we recommend you contact your community college to let them know you have opted-in and request information regarding your missing requirements.
- You may change your decision at any time. Opt-out using the same steps above.
NOTE: If you are awarded the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree through the Reverse Transfer program, UNC Pembroke will honor the degree to fulfill our General Education requirements. Your advisor can only advise you on UNC Pembroke degree requirements. It is your responsibility to understand your community college requirements for completing an associate degree.
After the end of each fall and spring semester, your course history will be sent to your NCCC via the UNC System Office. The NCCC will review your program. It is the responsibility of your community college to view your information in the UNC System database and complete the graduation process. If you have fulfilled the requirements for an associate degree, the NCCC will email notification to your BraveMail. Once your community college notifies you of your graduation, please submit an official transcript back to UNC Pembroke's Office of the Registrar so we can update your General Education requirements.
