Applying for Aid
If you need financial help for college, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a great place to start. FAFSA can give you access to Pell grants, Stafford loans and work-study funds to help you reach graduation. Students must report UNCP’s Federal School Code when they file in order for UNCP to consider them for financial aid.

Financial Aid Overview

To receive financial aid, you must be fully admitted to UNC Pembroke. FAFSA typically opens on October 1 for the following academic year.
To get the most aid, submit your application by the priority deadline of March 1. Late applications may receive less aid.
A new FAFSA should be filed each year the student wants to be considered for financial aid. File as early as possible for the best chance for the most aid.
Tips for Filing FAFSA

Why You Should Apply
All students should complete the FAFSA — even if you have a plan to pay for college or think you won’t qualify. You may be surprised! Plus, you need a completed FAFSA to apply for federal student loans or UNCP scholarships.
As a general rule, you should file the FAFSA as early as possible for the best access to the maximum aid available. There is limited financial aid funding in some areas like state grants, so students who apply by the priority date receive priority access to those limited funds. UNCP's Priority Filing deadline is March 1.
If you missed the FAFSA Priority Filing deadline don't worry, It’s not too late! We process FAFSAs all year round!

What You Need To Apply
For your financial aid application, you need:
- A list of schools to which you plan to apply
- Your FSA ID
- Your and your parents’ social security numbers
- A copy of previous tax returns
- Records of any untaxed income & assets
- The UNCP Federal School Code: 002954
Make sure both the student and parent (for undergraduate dependent students) sign the FAFSA or it will be rejected.

Avoid Delays
Submitting your FAFSA

Submitting your FAFSA accurately is the first step in securing financial aid at UNC Pembroke. Be sure to read all instructions carefully — mistakes or missing information can slow down the process and delay your aid.
Here are a few common errors to avoid:
-
Double-check your personal information. Make sure your name, date of birth, and Social Security number are all entered correctly.
-
Pay close attention to tax sections. Use the FAFSA help buttons to identify the correct tax line numbers. Whenever possible, use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to import your tax data—this reduces the chance of errors.
-
Respond quickly to any follow-up requests. If you're selected for verification or asked to provide additional information, submit it as soon as possible to avoid processing delays.
-
Keep copies of your documents. You may need to provide supporting paperwork to UNCP’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships later.
DEPENDENCY STATUS ON THE FAFSA
Dependency status determines whose information must be reported on the FAFSA. A dependent student is required to report both student and parent information. An independent student will report only student (and spouse, if applicable) information. More info about how to determine dependency status is on the Department of Education website.
