A Guide For Your Student's Health
Required steps before orientation:
-
Health Form & Immunizations
Complete and submit required health and immunization records online via the Student Health Patient Portal. North Carolina law requires this for students taking 5+ semester hours. - Fall Semester Deadline: September 16, 2025
-
Health Insurance
Students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours must have health insurance. Without coverage, they’ll be automatically enrolled in the university-sponsored plan unless they successfully waive it. Waiver deadlines vary each semester—visit Student Blue NC to submit proof of equivalent coverage. - Fall Semester Deadline to Enroll or Waive: September 10, 2025
Exceptions:
-
Fully online/distance education students
-
Students with adequate off-campus coverage
-
Ensure your student has their insurance card (front and back) with policy details and pharmacy coverage.
-
Although there’s no campus pharmacy, students can access local pharmacies: Old Main Pharmacy (walking distance), Pembroke Drug, Walmart and Healthkeeperz.
-
Talk with your student about health-related decisions—sleep habits, managing stress, alcohol use, nutrition, sexual health, and finances.
-
Discuss your expectations and let them know you’re there to listen.
-
HIPAA Note: Once your student turns 18, their health information is protected. No details—including billing—can be shared without a signed Consent to Release form.
Send your student to campus with a basic first-aid kit, including:
-
Band‑Aids, thermometer, ace bandage, sunscreen, cotton swabs
-
Pain relievers (acetaminophen/ibuprofen), hand sanitizer
-
Antibiotic cream, hydrogen peroxide
-
Allergy relief (e.g., Benadryl), anti‑diarrheal (e.g., Imodium)
If your student manages ongoing health issues, help them create a plan—this might include medication refills, specialist appointments or necessary medical care coordination.
