Considered one of the most vocal students in Nancy Strickland Fields’ museum studies class––UNC Pembroke senior Angelina Henhawk––sat in stunned silence last week as Rick West was a guest lecturer. West, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian Country, is the founding director of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and the current president of the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. Freshman Onyx Thorp was also admittedly starstruck.

Book from the Nook celebrates first year at Museum of the Southeast American Indian
January marked one year since the 'Book from the Nook' project debuted at the Museum of the Southeast American Indian at UNC Pembroke. The 'Book from the Nook' is a Native authors series featuring Native children's books. During a Facebook live on the third Tuesday of each month, a Native author or reader shares a children's book about Native culture, history and identity. These books are fun and relate essential lessons and ideas of understanding about Native cultures.

Brass Transit: Musical Legacy of Chicago stops at UNCP
Givens Performing Arts Center on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke will host Brass Transit: The Musical Legacy of Chicago on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Metcon and Rust Enterprises. Tickets range from $19 to $29 for adults and $10 for children. A pre-show dinner will be served at 6 p.m. next door to GPAC in the UC Annex. Tickets to the dinner are sold separately.

UNCP hosts Scotland County community leaders to explore partnership, growth opportunities
Tasha Locklear wants more than a career—she wants to make a difference in her community. But, as a non-traditional student, going back to school meant finding both a program that works with her schedule and the confidence to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. Partnerships like the ones between UNCP and the Scotland Health Care System are training the next generation of health care workers like Locklear, who will, in turn, provide care for the community they call home.

College students staff NCAS booth for Astronomy Days
College students and more college students. This year’s North Carolina Academy of Science (NCAS) booth for Astronomy Days was a smashing success, and in no small measure because of great help from students from UNC Pembroke and Meredith College. Students staffed the booth on both days (February 3-4) of the annual event at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. And these students were busy.

BraveNation Powwow and Gathering, March 23 at UNCP
The BraveNation Powwow and Gathering (BNPG) will be held Saturday, March 23, in the Jones Athletic Center at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Everyone is welcome. Grand entry is at noon. The doors open to the public at 10 a.m.
