UNC Pembroke awards 983 degrees at Winter Commencement

When Anthony Guerra decided to leave his job as a detective to pursue a college degree, he convinced his wife, Blanca, to further her education, too. “I was scared at first because we have two small kids and I was working full time––but we did it!” said Blanca, flashing a huge smile and gripping her UNC Pembroke diploma.

Biomanufacturing Training to be hosted at UNC Pembroke

UNC Pembroke and North Carolina Central University today announced an inaugural bioprocessing training to help students and residents prepare for entry level positions in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The two-week, hands-on short course will be offered for free from Jan. 22 to Feb. 2, 2024, for up to 12 participants. Training will be held at UNCP’s Biotechnology Research and Training Center, four miles southeast of campus at Carolina Commerce and Technology Park (COMtech).

McGee, Haladay to deliver Winter Commencement address

Dr. Jerry McGee, president emeritus of Wingate University and longtime American Indian studies professor Dr. Jane Haladay, will give the Winter Commencement address at UNC Pembroke this weekend. Haladay will speak at The Graduate School ceremony on Friday, December 8. McGee is the keynote speaker at the undergraduate ceremony on Saturday, December 9.

UNCP’s Anna Grossheim – All-American soccer star, local hero

Anna Grossheim is a UNC Pembroke soccer superstar by day. Real-life superhero by night. Grossheim has been tearing up Conference Carolinas’ opponents on the pitch for the past four seasons. Off the field, she moonlights as an EMT––helping save lives. Not only is she trained in life support and cardiac care, but she is also a volunteer firefighter with the Red Springs Fire Department and a certified rescue diver.

UNCP earns accreditation for educator prep programs

The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) announced that UNC Pembroke is one of 34 providers to receive accreditation for their educator preparation programs. The fall 2023 review by the CAEP Accreditation Council resulted in 34 educator preparation providers receiving accreditation, bringing the total to 551 providers approved under the CAEP Accreditation Standards––rigorous, nationally recognized standards that were developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs.

UNCP’s Magally Ortiz-Rojas receives Community Impact Student Award

UNC Pembroke junior Magally Ortiz-Rojas is the recipient of the 2023 Community Impact Award by NC Campus Engagement for her commitment and contribution to civic and community engagement. Ortiz-Rojas was honored for her achievements during the biennial Citizenship Service Networking and Partnership biennial student conference at N.C. State University on November 4. Ortiz-Rojas was selected because her role as a student leader has been instrumental, evident through several impactful projects in collaboration with various campus departments and community organizations.

Native New Yorkers, like Rizihery Saenz, will forever be impacted by 9/11. Shortly after the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil, Saenz relocated with his family to North Carolina.

Conservation students join Nature Conservancy in collecting wiregrass seed

Students experienced hands-on learning when they assisted The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in collecting wiregrass seeds in Calloway Community Nature Park. Rare species of animals and plants, including federally endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers and Michaux’s sumac, inhabit the park (also called Calloway Forest Preserve). The park is undergoing habitat restoration to revitalize its longleaf pine ecosystems.
