UNCP spotlights Brenda Chavez Soriano in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, UNC Pembroke proudly recognizes junior history major Brenda Chavez Soriano. Soriano, a Maynor Honors College student, stands out in the classroom and the campus community, assisting with coordinating Hispanic heritage events, among other duties as chair of the Hispanic and Caribbean American Heritage Committee. She is president of the Latin Student Union, a REACH Mellon Fellow, a peer academic leader and a women’s club soccer team member.

UNCP climbs in U.S. News & World Report rankings
UNC Pembroke climbed 11 spots in the newly released U.S. News & World Report 2023-2024 Best Colleges rankings. UNCP is ranked No. 45 out of 136 Regional Universities in the South––jumping 20 spots in the last three years. The university also continued an upward trajectory in the Best Colleges for Veterans category, increasing 10 spots to No. 16. Earlier this year, UNCP earned the 2023-2024 Military Friendly School designation and is currently ranked No. 3 among small public universities nationwide.
UNCP alumnae selected as Lead for North Carolina Fellows
UNC Pembroke alumnae Brittany Best and Nyah Sykes have been selected for the Lead for North Carolina at the UNC School of Government fellowship program. The program recruits, trains and places young leaders in paid one-year fellowships to strengthen local governments across the state and cultivate a new generation of public service leaders.
Dr. Cherry Beasley leaves extraordinary legacy
Dr. Cherry Maynor Beasley, the first nursing faculty member at UNC Pembroke, is retiring after dedicating 31 years to educating students and service to the nursing profession.
UNCP welcomes four new members to Board of Trustees
UNC Pembroke has announced the appointments of four new members of its Board of Trustees––Ron Gibson '74, Jim Hyler and Pat Willoughby '76. Aspen Andersson, student government president, joins the board as an ex-officio member for the 2023-2024 academic year. The new trustees were sworn in on Thursday during the board's first meeting of the 2023-2024 academic year. During the meeting, Allen Jamerson and Ed Brooks were re-elected as chair and vice chair, respectively. Mickey Gregory was elected as secretary.
UNCP names 2023 Alumni Award winners
Four University of North Carolina at Pembroke alumni who stand out for successful careers and service to others have been selected as recipients of the 2023 UNCP Alumni Awards. Presented annually by the UNCP Alumni Association, the awards celebrate the accomplishments and impact of former students who make a difference in countless ways. This year’s winners are Dr. Shelli Brewington, Kelvin Oxendine, Trey Allen and Madison Wilcox. They will be honored at the annual Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony on October 27 at the University Center Annex, beginning at 6 p.m.
Blake, Rowson named 2023 Brody Early Assurance Scholars at UNCP
Freshmen Connor Blake and Angela Rowson are the 2023 Brody Early Assurance Scholars at UNC Pembroke, granting admission to one of the top medical programs in North Carolina. The UNCP pair have been guaranteed spots in the 2027 entering class at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. One of the most coveted four-year merit awards at UNCP, the Early Assurance Program pays for tuition, books, room, and board.
Biology undergrad Martina Van Etten immersed in deepwater research
Martina Van Etten spent much of the summer months on the campus of East Carolina University, where she learned to map the feeding regions of deepwater sablefish in the Pacific Ocean. The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation STEM Summer Immersion Program at East Carolina University had placed her in the lab of oceanographer Dr. Rebecca Asch. To tackle questions related to the effects of warming oceans on sablefish larvae, Asch and her post-doc Dr. Kat Dale mentored Martina in the use of deep-sea data sets and modeling tools.
UNCP student gains invaluable experience from University of Bath internship
Kimberly Yard, a senior chemistry major at UNC Pembroke, recently returned from the United Kingdom, where she participated in a nine-week research internship at the University of Bath. Yard was among seven college students nationwide selected for the International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program funded by the National Science Foundation.
