Bicycling Rules of the Road

Bicycles are considered vehicles, and cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities to follow road rules as motorists. When riding, always:

  • Obey all traffic laws. A bicycle is a vehicle and you’re a driver. When you ride in the street, obey all traffic signs, signals and lane markings.
  • Watch for pedestrians. Bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked crosswalks or within unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
  • Yield to traffic when appropriate. Almost always, drivers on a smaller road must yield (wait) for traffic on a major or larger road. If there is no stop sign or traffic signal and you are coming from a smaller roadway (out of a driveway, from a sidewalk, a bike path, etc.), you must slow down and look to see if the way is clear before proceeding. This also means yielding to pedestrians who have already entered a crosswalk.
  • Be predictable. Ride in a straight line, not in and out of cars. Signal your moves to others.
  • Stay alert at all times. Use your eyes and ears. Watch for potholes, cracks, wet leaves, storm grates, railroad tracks or anything that could make you lose control of your bike. You need your ears to hear traffic and avoid dangerous situations; don’t wear a headset when you ride.
  • Look before turning. When turning left or right, always look behind you for a break in traffic, then signal before making the turn. Watch for left- or right-turning traffic.
  • Watch for parked cars. Ride far enough out from the curb to avoid the unexpected from parked cars (like doors opening or cars pulling out).
  • Control your bicycle. Always ride with at least one hand on the handlebars. Carry books and other items in the bicycle carrier or a backpack.
  • Watch for and avoid road hazards.
  • Avoid riding at night. If riding at night, wear neon, fluorescent or other bright colors or something that reflects light, such as reflective tape or markings or flashing lights. Just because you can see a driver doesn’t mean the driver can see you.
  • Wear a helmet. Helmets are available for checkout.
  • Remove headphones. Bicyclists may not wear earplugs or a headset.
  • Be alert to the weather. Check the local weather forecast before heading out to ride. During inclement weather, bicycle rentals will be stopped when rider safety is in jeopardy. Riders who are already out when inclement weather occurs will be called and notified of the warning.
  • Secure the bicycle. Please remember to lock the bicycles and/or do not leave them unattended. If the bicycle is lost or stolen, you will be responsible for a $400 replacement fee.
  • Return the bicycle on time. We charge a $10 late fee if a bicycle is not returned before 8:30 p.m. of the check-out day.
  • Park correctly. Do not park bicycles in a way that blocks pedestrians. Bicycles must be secured to a bicycle rack; do not lay bicycles on their sides on the sidewalk.
  • Report problems. To report a mechanical or other issue, please call 910.521.6575.
  • Use hand signals.
  • For more bike safety tips, watch these videos on bike safety.

RSVP: Reserve a spot on the airport shuttle

Reservations are required to guarantee a seat. Only registered riders for the date of travel may use the airport shuttle service. Riders must register at least one week prior to the transport dates. Due to limited seating, early sign-ups are encouraged.

Cost: A $20 registration fee is required to reserve your seat.

Eligibility: All currently enrolled UNCP students with a valid Braves One ID

Campus Pick-up Location: Jones Athletic Center Lot #14

Students returning to UNCP may schedule a pickup at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). The shuttle pickup and departure times from RDU are posted below.

Airport Pick-up Location: Returning students must meet outside terminal #2 downstairs, baggage claim (last door on the right). Exit the terminal at Delta and go to the right. Follow the sidewalk to the end and look for the UNCP Airport Shuttle sign.

Every effort is made to adhere to the posted schedule. However, you are encouraged to check this site for schedule changes. We reserve the right to change the schedule due to circumstances beyond our control, such as adverse weather or mechanical failures. Drivers have been encouraged to post updated changes at the shuttle stop. If you have questions, please contact the James B. Chavis Student Center.

Please be punctual. The shuttle bus will leave on time.

The airport shuttle operates during major UNCP scheduled breaks. The shuttle schedule can be found on BraveConnect.

The airport shuttle schedule is subject to change without notice. Shuttles will be canceled if no one registers. Please check frequently for updates.

Bus Pick-Ups/Drop-Offs: These pick-ups/drop-offs coincide with the scheduled airport runs and interested individuals should plan accordingly. The shuttle will only transport riders to the bus station if a student has a bus ticket. Students who plan to take the train will need to ride the van to the bus station and then take the city bus to the train station at a cost of $1.75 one way.

To schedule flights, contact:

Raleigh-Durham-International Airport
PO Box 80001,
RDU Airport, NC 27623

While we will make every effort to arrive on time and depart when scheduled, unscheduled delays may occur. We are not responsible for missed flights, bus departures, or reimbursements due to unforeseen mechanical failures or unscheduled delays of the shuttle service.

Airport/Bus Transport Confirmations and Cancellations: An email confirmation will be sent within one business day following registration. If an email is not received, the reservation was not successful. Please contact the Chavis Student Center at 910.521.6899 immediately. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Another email will be sent at least two days prior to the transport date to confirm that your travel plans have not changed.
